DIY “Pupsicles”

With the weather warming up (finally!), you may be thinking of unique ways to keep your pup cool, especially after a good walk, play time at the park, or spending time in the backyard. Frozen desserts can be one of the best things about summer and as dog owners, we love seeing the joy of giving our dog a fun, new treat, so why not combine the two? Here are a few awesome dog popsicle (pupsicles) recipes your dog will surely love!

Peanut Butter-Blueberry Pup-cream (courtesy of wearwagrepeat.com)

You will need:

  • Peanut butter (dog friendly or xylitol-free)
  • Plain yogurt
  • Frozen blueberries
  • Water
  • Treat sticks (Milk Bones, jerky, carrots – anything long and fairly thin)

Directions:

  1. Place peanut butter in bottom of popsicle mold, ice cube tray, or Dixie cup
  2. Put 2-3 blueberries per mold (or more depending on size of mold)
  3. Layer in plain yogurt and then top with water to fill the mold
  4. Insert treat stick into mold to be able to easily remove popsicle
  5. Freeze for 4 hours or overnight, pop out and enjoy!

You will need:

  • ½ cup chicken broth (no salt or low-sodium)
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 Gala apple

Directions:

  1. In a measuring cup, mix together chicken stock and water
  2. Wash and slice the apple into bite size pieces
  3. Add a few apple pieces to popsicle mold, ice cube tray, or Dixie cups, then fill halfway with chicken stock-water mix
  4. Freeze for 3 hours
  5. Remove from mold, and enjoy!

You will need:

  • 1 cup plain non-fat yogurt
  • 1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 ripe banana

Directions:

  1. Mix together banana and pumpkin puree with either a fork, blender, or food processor
  2. Combine with plain non-fat yogurt in a large bowl
  3. Add honey and stir until ingredients are well combined
  4. Spoon mixture into popsicle molds, ice cube tray, or Dixie cups
  5. Add treat stick or rawhide twist into center and freeze for 4 hours or overnight
  6. Remove from mold, and enjoy!

Dog popsicles are an easy, healthy, and cheap way to treat (and cool) your furry loved one this summer. Have some fun getting creative – the best part of making these treats is your dog will love you forever!
