Cat Psychology: The Gift

Cats can express their feelings toward humans in many, sometimes strange ways. What may seem gross or painful, can actually be a sign of love. It is important to keep our minds open about their actions and why they do such things to get our attention.

Take for example, the gift. You may be familiar with this behaviour that cats like to give their owners gifts, such as toys or small dead animals. There are a couple different speculations as to why they do this. According to an article on HuffPost, this is a sign of love. This theory is supported by Elizabeth Palermo in her article on Live Science.

By leaving a dead animal on the back porch, your cat is acting out its natural role as mother and teacher. You, her loving owner, represent her surrogate family. And frankly, she knows you would never have been able to catch that delicious mouse on your own.

So, the question is then, do they bring us these gifts because they love us and want us to be well fed? Or do they see us as their children; young, weak, and unable hunt for ourselves. I believe the approach to this one can be argued both ways, and can be simultaneously true. However it is pretty certain that this is not a sign of hatred.

These strange feline – human exchanges are their way of communicating with us. You can always research them to see the theories of others in similar situations, but remember you are their main caretaker. You see them day to day and witness their communications first hand. The interpretation of them is for you to decide. I am personally fascinated! Please comment and let us know some of your kitty’s ways of communicating with you. We at DGW would like to know!
