When your doggies and kitties aren’t being visited by yours truly, what do they get up to? Sometimes this is an easy question to answer, when you come home to a pile of re-used and chewed garbage on the floor. But for those less obvious situations, how do they spend their time. Some thoughts from Kathy Santo on GH (GoodHouseKeeping) are:
Dogs live in the moment. You leave, they sigh, they assess what’s available to meet their needs, they get bored, they sleep (hence the energetic, enthusiastic greeting you receive when you come home). You’ll notice, however, that I said “most” dogs. There are a small percentage who have separation anxiety, destructive tendencies, and/or incredible energy.
Most animals know your morning routine as well as you do. They see you gathering your bags, grabbing your keys and heading for the door. Then, they give you the saddest look, as if you’re never going to return or see them again. So, do your animals wait for you patiently? Or do they get revenge for your absence?
The revenge aspect is a good reason for crating your dog. Some dogs have a habit of chewing their way through the house if they’re left out without your supervision. Cats, also, can wreak havoc on the house during the day. But can you really blame them? Some owners are away for 8 or more hours a day, what else are they suppose to do with their time and energy?
This is one of many reasons we can be of help. Sometimes that extra visit in the middle of the day can make a huge difference in your animals behaviour. It can bring their energy level down through exercise, and give them something to do during their long period of time without you. The hope is, when we leave they are more than content with having a long nap until you get home.
Please tell us your fun stories of what your animals get into while you’re gone! We’d love to hear them.
In the mean time, please enjoy this video of a naughty puppy having way too much fun…
