Curious Cat

Cats often make us laugh, and sometimes cry with their behaviours. The late night singing, the crazy tantrums that have them run across the house, and most of all, the knocking things over. Whether its from a small table or the tallest shelf in the house, cats have a talent for knocking over any item that may seem interesting to them. As cat owners, we’ve probably all seen this once or twice. Sometimes in slow motion when it’s breakable. Either way they definitely know how to make a mess. But why? What is going through their mind when they see something that must go down?

Could cats knocking things off tables and shelves have something to do with your cat’s prey drive? “Probably,” says Adi Hovav, senior feline behavior counselor at the ASPCA Adoption Center. “Cats are hardwired to hunt for their food, so knocking things over may be a manifestation of this instinct.” Further, Shojai explains, “Cats use their paws to test and explore objects, and the movement, sound, and touch or feel of the object helps them understand what might be safe or not.” Your cat’s paw pads are very sensitive, so when they pat, swat, and knock something down, it helps them better explore the objects around them. Another very logical reason for cats causing trouble is simply to get your attention. It can be easy for cats to get bored, and need more stimulation. Their solution is to take it out on the objects in your home, apparently. Any attention from you is better than their boredom, so try to keep the royalty of the household appeased. Leave lots of toys out for them, play with them. Some can even be taught fetch! Keep life interesting for them, it may save some objects in your house.
