Spring Dog Treat Recipes

We are always looking for ways to get creative for our dogs food and cookies. One great day to fill a Sunday is with baking, and if you’re already baking for yourself, maybe you can make a tasty and healthy treat for your pup as well. So, in the spirit of the green arising more as the snow melts, let’s looks at some spring inspired dog cookie recipes from our friends, The Dog People.

No – Bake Ball Treats

“Simply combine 1/2 cup plain yogurt, 1 cup natural peanut butter, and 3 cups rolled oats. Scoop out balls, and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving to your happy dog. A dusting of unsweetened coconut will make these simple treats look like springtime pollen, but don’t worry, they won’t make you sneeze!”

Mint and Parsley Green Treats

If you’re a dog mom that is used to food allergies, check out this one!

Ingredients

  1. 2.5 cups whole wheat flour
  2. 1 cup water
  3. 1 T vegetable oil
  4. 1/2 cup quick oats
  5. 2 T fresh mint, chopped
  6. 1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  7. 10-12 drops green food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, combine the flour, oats, oil, water, and herbs. Mix well.
  3. Add food coloring, then knead the dough until color is evenly dispersed.
  4. Roll out the dough on parchment paper, using extra flour as needed so it doesn’t stick.
  5. Roll out about 1/4 to 1/2 thickness.
  6. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
  7. Place on lined baking sheet and bake for 35 minutes.
  8. Let treats cool before serving.

Spinach Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/8 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1 2/3 cup frozen spinach
  • 1 cup grated carrot
  • 1/8 cup chicken broth, low sodium
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F
  2. Whisk together the flour, oats and cheese.
  3. Place the spinach in a microwave safe bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of water. cover and cook for 2 minutes, or until heated through. Stir and drain any excess water.
  4. In a blender, puree the lightly cooked spinach, carrots and chicken broth.
  5. Thoroughly scrape the pureed mixture out of the blender into the dry ingredients.
  6. Add the extra virgin olive oil.
  7. With a fork, break apart and stir together the spinach and flour mixtures.
  8. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
  9. Using a tablespoon sized cookie scooper, place spinach balls on the prepared sheet.
  10. Dip the bottom of a drinking glass (or something similar) in water. Next, gently press one spinach ball into a flattened cookie shape. Repeat process with each rounded ball.
  11. Bake for 20 minutes.
  12. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Storing – These homemade dog cookies will keep fresh in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Keep them for up to 6 months in your freezer.

Yield – Using a tablespoon sized cookie scooper, this recipe will make 24 dog cookies.
