How did your dog do with the Fireworks?

As much as we humans love to celebrate our National Holiday, the ways in which we do so can be extremely stressful to our fur babies. That’s right, ’tis the season for fireworks. Many dogs have this fear and it is perfectly natural for them to react to such loud sounds. Even more so, the vibrations they cause beneath them. But how can we help them through this stressful time?

There are many philosophies on the topic, and the solution may not be the same for every dog. However, there are a few common tricks that can certainly make them feel safe during this stressful time.

A couple easy ways to help our furry family is dependent on the situation during the fireworks. If you plan to be away to watch them, it may be better to leave your pup at home. Some dogs have certain places in the house where they feel more safe. This may be the crate, laundry room, basement etc. Whichever space this may be, allow them access to it. Some owners also swear by leaving on a radio, or some form of sound to drown out the loud bangs.

If you plan to be home, try to create the energy that nothing is different during this time of big booms. It may help your dog to know that you’re calm, and that nothing unusual is wrong here.

There are also many things you can purchase to help with your dogs anxiety. For example, many dog owners swear by the “Thundershirt”. This is a product that acts as a tight shirt to wrap around the dogs body, similar to a hug or a swaddle. However, it is important to note that with this product and many others like it, you must introduce it in the proper context. The purpose of the product is to help the animal associate it with a calm, happier time.

All we want for our animal friends is for them to be happy, but this can be difficult sometimes. Remember that your dog may be different from any other dog, and to use his/her information when trying to find your solution.

In speaking about fireworks, much of this information can be used for thunderstorms. And, given the heat we’ve had this past week, I can sense one a brewin’! Keep your extended furry family in mind during these times, and remember we are always here for you if you need us!
