Halo’s wish came true this Christmas, a rescue from West Virginia. Halo isn’t just any rescue. She is a senior, a blind dog and her new adopted mom just found out that she is almost deaf as well.
We met Halo’s adopted mom Carmen Johnson just a few weeks ago shortly after she adopted Halo. Carmen was looking for a Pet Taxi to shuttle Halo to & from her vet & ophthalmologist appointments to see if there was any way to save Halo’s eyesight.
Halo has a sad past. Chained up outside for 8 years with 50 other neglected dogs. Halo’s sight began to fail and her hearing as well from neglect and chronic ear infections. When Carmen was contacted by Niagara Dog Rescue with a senior, blind dog in need Carmen didn’t say no. This wasn’t the first time Carmen had opened her home to fostering or adopting special needs dogs and Carmen embraced this opportunity. Carmen immediately related to Halo as she herself has had recent challenges with her own health.
Halo had just 24 hours to be rescued before being euthanized, so in record time Carmen & Halo were connected. The first few days Halo drank excessively but wouldn’t eat. Carmen accidentally split some food on the floor which Halo quickly ate and Carmen then realized that Halo had never eaten out of a bowl before. She drank excessively because she often went without water.
Halo’s story doesn’t end there. Halo won’t regain her sight. She has Keratoconjunctivitis in both eyes and can only see some shadows. She is almost deaf but she is safe and she is happy and most of all she is LOVED!
Here is what Carmen has to say about Halo’s journey.
Halo is resilient, she is a daily reminder that whatever happened in your past let it go & move on. Halo is completely embracing her future. Today and for the rest of Halo’s life there will be food in her bowl and a number of warm orthopedic beds for Halo to sleep on. For Halo, today is a good day!
If you have the funds GIVE.
If you have the funds & time ADOPT.
If you have the time FOSTER.
When you foster you have your heart break a thousand times so that their heart never breaks again.
Dog Gone Walking is proud to be partnering with Taffy’s Legacy, a local dog rescue, to match adoptable dogs with their perfect human. Over the years, we have seen the love and joy that rescues can bring to everyone around them, and we firmly believe that all dogs deserve a home to call their own. We hope that this partnership with Taffy’s Legacy will bring us one step closer to finding every dog their furever family. www.taffyslegacy.com
