Cats have been making great companions for humans for centuries. They seem to be becoming even more popular as they are more independent than dogs. This can be very helpful for those who work long hours, and/or frequently travel.
Although, they were never the same type of companion that we expect from our dogs. Dogs and cats are very different in their social activity. Dogs are pack animals, while cats are not. This completely changes the ways in which they interact with others, and handle stressful situations. Dogs lean on their pack for safety, ie; you. Cats are more prone to find safety by hiding, rather than seek comfort from another. For this reason, cats may not miss us while we’re away.
“This study shows that cats do not need their humans to feel safe, they don’t depend on us, they look after themselves. If they are scared a cat won’t come to its owner, it will jump on top of the wardrobe or hide under the bed.
“But in a way that’s a real compliment. Cats won’t live in an unhappy home, they’ll just walk out. And abandoned or feral cats get on just fine on their own.
“Cats are not pack animals, they don’t depend on other cats. So they are not going to depend on their owners. But it doesn’t meant that they don’t want to be around their owners. This shows that they really do.” (Cat expert Celia Haddon, author of Cats Behaving Badly and How To Read Your Cat’s Mind)
Cats are independent, but that does not mean they don’t love you. They are still happy to see you when you get home, and crave human interaction. This study tested 20 subjects on their reaction when their owner left and when a stranger left. Though some were more vocal when the owner left, many determined that the loss of their human had little affect on their sense of security. It is certainly and interesting read, check out the study for yourselves here.
